Growing up, I wasn’t always the kind of person who readily shared what I knew or helped others. As a child, I was quite competitive and, at times, a bit envious. I studied at a government primary school, and my tendency was to keep things to myself, whether it was knowledge or ideas. I rarely helped my friends or tried to guide them when they needed it.

But all of that changed one day because of my elder sister, Rashida Begum.

Rashida Begum, who served as the head madam at Center Para Government Primary School in Patuakhali, has been an enduring source of inspiration in my life. As head madam, she not only nurtured the minds of countless students but also shaped my own path through her wisdom and guidance.

One day, during my childhood, she noticed my reluctance to share what I knew with others. She said something simple yet profound:

“Sadat, taking light from one candle to another never dims the first; instead, it brightens everything around.”

That statement struck me deeply. From that moment on, I realized that helping others, sharing what I have, and spreading positivity only makes the world a brighter place. It was a turning point in my life. I began to let go of the envy and the competitiveness that clouded my mind. Instead, I embraced the idea that by lifting others, we all rise together.

Madam Rashida’s wisdom helped me evolve into a person who strives to spread light, kindness, and knowledge wherever I go. Her words have echoed through every aspect of my life, from my work with Cyber Teens to my everyday interactions with others. It is this spirit of sharing and supporting that has fueled my desire to make a difference, especially in the lives of teenagers across Bangladesh.

Recently, I visited Madam Rashida after many years. She has been unwell, but her heart is as bright and full of love as ever. We spent hours reminiscing, sharing stories, and reconnecting. She was so happy to see me, and despite her illness, she radiated the same warmth and encouragement that she always has. Her prayers and love continue to guide me, and I am forever grateful for her presence in my life.

Rashida Begum is not just a teacher by profession; she is a teacher of life’s greatest lessons. The lesson she taught me about sharing light has become a guiding principle in everything I do. As I continue on my journey, I do so with the hope of spreading the same light she once gave to me.

May Allah grant her good health and happiness, and may her legacy of kindness continue to inspire me and those around her for years to come.

With love and gratitude,
Sadat Rahman
